ITIN Expired? Here's Exactly What to Do (2026 Guide)

Your ITIN expired? Don't panic. Learn how to check if your ITIN is expired, what happens if you file with an expired ITIN, and exactly how to renew it in 2026.

Don't Panic - An Expired ITIN Is Completely Fixable

If you've discovered that your ITIN has expired (or might be expired), take a breath. This is one of the most common ITIN situations, and the solution is straightforward. Your ITIN number doesn't go away - it just needs to be renewed. The process is simpler than the original application, and you'll get the same number back.

This guide explains exactly how to determine if your ITIN is expired, what the consequences are, and how to renew it quickly in 2026.

How to Check If Your ITIN Is Expired

There are two ways an ITIN can expire:

Reason 1: Middle Digits Expiration Schedule

The IRS has been systematically expiring ITINs based on their middle digits. If your ITIN has any of the following middle digits, it has already expired:

Middle DigitsExpiration DateStatus in 2026
70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79December 31, 2018Expired
80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88December 31, 2019Expired
90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99December 31, 2020Expired
83, 84, 85, 86, 87 (issued before 2013)December 31, 2021Expired
70-88 (remaining)December 31, 2022Expired
All remaining pre-2013 ITINsVariesCheck with IRS

How to find your middle digits: Your ITIN format is 9XX-XX-XXXX. The middle digits are the 4th and 5th numbers. For example, if your ITIN is 912-78-1234, your middle digits are 78.

Reason 2: Three-Year Non-Use Rule

Even if your ITIN wasn't affected by the scheduled expiration above, it will expire if you haven't used it on a federal tax return for three consecutive tax years.

For example: - If you last filed using your ITIN for tax year 2022, it expires at the end of 2025 - If you last filed using your ITIN for tax year 2021, it's already expired in 2026 - If you used it for tax year 2023 or later, it's still active

How to Confirm Your ITIN Status

If you're unsure whether your ITIN is expired:

  1. Call the IRS: Dial 1-800-829-1040 and ask them to verify your ITIN status
  2. Check your records: Look at when you last filed a tax return using your ITIN
  3. Review your ITIN number: Check the middle digits against the table above
  4. Try to e-file: An expired ITIN will be rejected during e-filing

What Happens If You File with an Expired ITIN

Filing a tax return with an expired ITIN doesn't create a penalty or legal issue, but it does cause processing problems:

For Your Tax Return

  • The return will still be processed - the IRS won't reject your return entirely
  • Certain credits will be disallowed - you won't receive:
  • - Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • - Credit for Other Dependents
  • - Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • - American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC)
  • Refund delays - your refund will be delayed while the IRS processes the return without these credits
  • You'll receive a notice - the IRS will send a letter (CP565) explaining that your ITIN needs renewal

For Dependents with Expired ITINs

If your dependent's ITIN is expired but yours is still valid: - Your return will process normally - Credits related to that dependent will be denied - Only the dependent's ITIN needs renewal (not yours)

The Good News

Once you renew your ITIN, you can file an amended return (Form 1040-X) for any year where credits were denied due to the expired ITIN. You can reclaim those credits retroactively (within the standard 3-year amendment window).

How to Renew Your Expired ITIN

Renewing an ITIN is simpler than the original application. Here's what you need:

Documents Required for Renewal

  • Form W-7 - check the "Renew an existing ITIN" box at the top
  • Identification documents - same requirements as original application:
  • - Option A: Valid passport (recommended - proves both identity and foreign status)
  • - Option B: Two documents from the IRS-approved list (national ID + birth certificate, etc.)
  • NO tax return required - this is a key difference from the original application

Important: You do NOT need to attach a tax return when renewing an ITIN. Just Form W-7 and your identification documents.

Option 1: Renew Through a CAA (Fastest - 2-4 Weeks)

Using a Certifying Acceptance Agent like ITIN.io is the fastest renewal method:

  1. Submit your information and documents to your CAA
  2. CAA verifies your identity and certifies documents
  3. CAA submits Form W-7 renewal to the IRS
  4. Receive confirmation in 2-4 weeks (standard season)

Advantages: - Keep your original documents - Fastest processing time - Expert review prevents rejection - No risk of document loss in mail

Option 2: Renew by Mail (8-10 Weeks)

You can mail your renewal directly to the IRS:

  1. Complete Form W-7 (check renewal box)
  2. Include original passport or certified copies of ID documents
  3. Mail to: IRS ITIN Operation, P.O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342
  4. Wait 8-10 weeks for processing
  5. Receive renewed ITIN letter and returned documents

Disadvantages: - Must mail original documents (or certified copies from issuing agency) - Longest processing time - Risk of document loss - No expert review (higher rejection chance)

Option 3: Visit an IRS TAC Office (4-6 Weeks)

You can visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center in person:

  1. Schedule an appointment at IRS.gov
  2. Bring Form W-7 and original identification documents
  3. IRS agent reviews and submits your application on-site
  4. Documents returned to you immediately
  5. Receive ITIN letter in 4-6 weeks

Advantages: - Documents returned same day - In-person verification

Disadvantages: - Limited TAC office locations - Must schedule appointment (can be weeks out) - Must appear in person in the U.S.

Family Renewals: Renew Together

The IRS allows (and encourages) family members to renew their ITINs together. If multiple family members have expired ITINs:

Who Can Renew Together

  • Primary taxpayer: The person whose ITIN appears on Line 1 of the tax return
  • Spouse: If filing jointly and spouse's ITIN is also expired
  • Dependents: Children or other dependents listed on the return

How Family Renewal Works

  1. Submit one Form W-7 per person needing renewal
  2. Include identification documents for each person
  3. Submit all W-7 forms together in one package
  4. All renewals are processed simultaneously

Why Renew as a Family

  • Convenience: One submission instead of multiple
  • Prevents future issues: All family ITINs stay on the same renewal cycle
  • Tax credits: Ensures all credits are available when you file
  • Saves time: Process once instead of dealing with it repeatedly

Family Renewal Checklist

  • Form W-7 for primary taxpayer (renewal box checked)
  • Form W-7 for spouse (if applicable)
  • Form W-7 for each dependent (signed by parent/guardian)
  • Passport or ID for each family member
  • Birth certificates for dependents (to prove relationship)
  • Marriage certificate (if spouse is renewing)

Important Things to Know About ITIN Renewal

Your Number Doesn't Change

When you renew, you get the exact same ITIN back. It's a renewal, not a replacement. All previous tax returns, bank accounts, and records associated with your old ITIN remain valid and connected.

You Can Renew Anytime

You don't have to wait until tax season to renew your ITIN. In fact, renewing during off-peak months (May-December) means faster processing. The IRS accepts renewal applications year-round.

There Is No Penalty for Having an Expired ITIN

An expired ITIN is not a violation of any rule. There's no fine, no legal consequence, and no negative mark on your record. It simply means your number needs to be reactivated before it can be used for new tax filings.

Renewal Is Free from the IRS

The IRS does not charge any fee to renew an ITIN. If you submit directly by mail or visit a TAC office, the only cost is postage. If you use a CAA, you'll pay for their professional services, but the IRS itself charges nothing.

You Don't Need a Tax Return to Renew

Unlike the original ITIN application (which usually requires an attached tax return), renewals do NOT require a tax return. This makes the process simpler and faster. Just Form W-7 and your identification documents.

Renew Before You Need to File

The best strategy is to renew your ITIN before tax season. This way, your ITIN is active when you're ready to file, and you won't face delays on your refund or credits.

Timeline: What to Do Based on Your Situation

Situation A: Tax Season Is Coming (Filing Deadline in 1-3 Months)

Recommended action: Start renewal immediately using a CAA

  1. Contact a CAA (like ITIN.io) today
  2. Submit documents within 1-2 days
  3. CAA submits renewal within a week
  4. If ITIN arrives before filing deadline: file normally
  5. If ITIN doesn't arrive in time: file extension (Form 4868) and file when ITIN is renewed

Situation B: You Need to File NOW (Deadline Imminent)

Recommended action: File extension + start renewal

  1. File Form 4868 for a 6-month extension (no penalty for extending)
  2. Start ITIN renewal immediately through a CAA
  3. Once ITIN is renewed, file your complete return with all eligible credits
  4. You have until October 15 (with extension) to file

Situation C: No Immediate Filing Need (Off-Season)

Recommended action: Renew now for fastest processing

  1. Apply for renewal during off-peak months (May-September)
  2. Use a CAA for 2-4 week processing
  3. Have your active ITIN ready well before next tax season
  4. No stress, no deadline pressure

Situation D: Already Filed with Expired ITIN (Credits Denied)

Recommended action: Renew + file amended return

  1. Start ITIN renewal immediately
  2. Once ITIN is renewed, file Form 1040-X (Amended Return)
  3. Claim the credits that were denied due to expired ITIN
  4. Receive refund for the difference (typically 8-12 weeks after amendment)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my ITIN is expired?

Check the middle digits of your ITIN against the expiration schedule above. Also consider whether you've used your ITIN on a tax return in the last three years. If neither condition applies, your ITIN is likely still active. You can also call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to confirm.

Can I still file taxes with an expired ITIN?

Yes, you can still file. The IRS will process your return, but certain tax credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC, etc.) will be disallowed until your ITIN is renewed. Once renewed, you can amend the return to claim those credits.

How long does ITIN renewal take?

Through a CAA: 2-4 weeks (standard season), 4-6 weeks (peak season). By mail: 8-10 weeks. At a TAC office: 4-6 weeks after your appointment.

Do I need a new passport for renewal?

You need a currently valid (unexpired) passport or other qualifying ID documents. If your passport has expired since your original ITIN application, you'll need to use your current valid passport or renew your passport first.

Will my bank account be affected?

No. Your existing bank accounts remain open and functional even if your ITIN expires. The bank may eventually ask you to update your tax identification information, but your account won't be closed due to ITIN expiration.

Can I renew online?

Unfortunately, the IRS does not currently offer online ITIN renewal. You must submit Form W-7 either through a CAA, by mail, or at a TAC office. However, using a service like ITIN.io lets you submit your documents digitally to the CAA, making the process as close to online as possible.

What if I lost my ITIN letter?

You don't need your original ITIN assignment letter to renew. As long as you know your ITIN number, you can proceed with renewal. If you've forgotten your number, the IRS can look it up when you call 1-800-829-1040 with proper identity verification.

Is there a deadline to renew?

No. There's no deadline or time limit for renewal. You can renew an expired ITIN at any time, whether it expired last year or five years ago. However, renewing sooner means you can file complete tax returns sooner and claim any credits you're entitled to.
